Elizabeth Sharp, age 95, of Amelia Island, Fla., passed away peacefully, Friday evening, Oct. 2, 2015 at her daughter’s residence in Jacksonville. Mrs. Sharp was born on Feb. 6, 1920 in Kristiansand, Norway, the eldest of the three children born to the late Helmer and Berta Hendricksen. Her family lived in Lyngdal in southern Norway where they lived for generations as farmers and ship owners. She passed through Ellis Island with her parents and was raised in Brooklyn and Staten Island, N.Y. Elizabeth graduated from high school in Staten Island and went on to attend Katharine Gibbs College in New York. In 1946, she married Howard Sharp, and they settled in Orange, Conn. They raised three wonderful children — Phil, Janet and Barbara. Liz worked at the Yale Child Study Center for 30 years where she helped the development of the world’s thinking on how doctors, parents and attorneys consider the needs and rights of children. Liz, Howard and Barbara lived in Taipei, Taiwan, for two years where Liz was engaged in several community projects helping families and orphans. In retirement she and Howard lived on lovely Woodridge Lake near Goshen, Conn., and after Howard died she lived for 20 years on Amelia Island, Fla., where she was a busy volunteer at the hospital, a docent for the Amelia Island History Museum and a leader in the Newcomer’s Club.

Liz has many great friends, children, grandchildren and a great grandson who will be ever inspired by her Norwegian hospitality, her zest for travel, friendliness and generosity.

Along with her parents, Mrs. Sharp was preceded in death by her daughter, Janet Markey in 1990, her siblings Esther McCann and Alf Hendricken, and her daughter-in-law Alynne Terrie Sharp in 2012.

She leaves behind her children, Dr. Philip Sharp of Jacksonville, Fla., and his wife Cathy; and Dr. Barbara Sharp and her husband Dr. Todd Sack of Jacksonville, Fla.; her grandchildren, Janna Sharp of Chicago, Ill.; Noah Sharp and his wife Jennifer of London, England; Jonathan Sack of San Francisco Calif.; Peter Sack and David Sack both of New York City, N.Y.; Alexander Markey of Richmond, Va., his wife Michelle; and great-grandson Stephen, Meghan Markey and Caitlin Markey, both of Washington, D.C.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 9, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Amelia Island Plantation Chapel with Pastor Ted Schroder officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband Howard P. Sharp in Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville at 2 p.m. A reception will follow in Jacksonville.
